Devils stay one point off the lead

Cardiff Devils stayed one point off the top of the league table with a 4-2 home win against a Guildford side that beat them by three goals only last Sunday.

Cardiff were ahead 16:40 into the first period through Blair Riley who tipped Sam Jardine’s blueline shot on the doorstep past Wouter Peeters. Guildford tied the game on the powerplay after Stephen Dixon was ejected for checking from behind. The goal came 46 seconds into period two and was a trademark Calle Ackered rocket. Joey Martin set up Evan Mosey for a nice wrist-shot finish to give the Devils the lead back at 34:31 as the period ended with the Devils one up as they had been after 20 minutes.

Gleason Fournier found the top corner of Peeters' net 2:19 into the final period to give the Devils a two-goal cushion, and when Joey Haddad made it 4-1 at 47:04, after Josh Batch had turned the puck over in the offensive zone, the Devils looked to be comfortable. Guildford made things interesting with an Ian Watters powerplay goal with 41 seconds to play but it was all they could muster as the hosts held on for a two-goal victory.

Cardiff's win and Dundee losing means that the Devils are also now assured of a playoff place.
