Hunt suspended for Illegal Check to the Head

Flyers forward receives suspension

On Sunday night in Fife, Flyers forward #74 Garet Hunt was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for an Illegal Check to the Head.

Stars forward Craig Garrigan, who is in his attacking zone, skates around the back of the net in control of the puck, and is engaged by Flyers defenceman Jeremy Masella. As the play moves up towards the half wall, Garrigan is pushed low by Masella in a legal battle. At this point, Hunt delivers a hit to an opponent who is in the vulnerable position, making the head the main point of contact, on a hit where the head contact is avoidable. This is an Illegal Check to the Head.

It is important to note that both elements of the illegal check to the head rule are met on this hit: first, the head is the main point of contact as Hunt's right arm makes contact with the head of Garrigan, driving it into the boards. Second, the head contact on this play is avoidable. It is Hunt who is in control of this hit, and he chooses to hit Garrigan who is in a vulnerable position on this play and makes the head the main point of contact.

To Summarise:

  • Illegal Check to the Head
  • Avoidable
  • Vulnerable opponent

Effective immediately Fife Flyers forward #74 Garet Hunt is fined and suspended for two games.
