Ferguson suspended for Boarding

Devils' forward receives suspension

On Sunday night in Cardiff, Devils #18 Brett Ferguson was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for Boarding.

As the puck is dumped into the Panthers’ defensive zone, both Panthers defenceman Cooper Zech and Devils Forward Brett Ferguson chase down the puck. Panthers goaltender Kevin Carr skates out of his crease to collect the loose puck behind his net and, upon seeing pressure, plays the puck towards the half-wall. At this point, Ferguson places both hands onto the back of Zech and extends his left arm, sending him dangerously into the boards. This is Boarding.

It is important to note that Ferguson sees the numbers of Zech, from the moment the puck is dumped into the zone until he eventually makes contact with Zech. This contact is avoidable.

The onus is on Ferguson to avoid the hit entirely, or at the very least minimise contact to ensure this is not a dangerous play.

To summarise:

  • This is Boarding
  • It is an avoidable hit

Cardiff Devils #18 Brett Ferguson is fined and suspended for one game.
