Alderson suspended for Slew-Footing

Devils forward receives suspension

On Friday night in Cardiff, Devils forward Brandon Alderson delivered a Slew-Foot to Blaze forward J.D Dudek.

As the video shows, Dudek receives a pass from a teammate and skates into the attacking zone with the puck, with Alderson tracking back to make a defensive play on the puck carrier along the wall. Alderson engages with his upper body, pulling Dudek backwards as he simultaneously extends his left leg to use as leverage in taking Dudek down. These actions cause Dudek to fall dangerously to the ice. This is slew-footing.

It is important to note that there are many occasions during the course of a game where players use either their legs or stick and upper body to restrain or impede opponents, or to gain leverage during a puck battle. When these plays rise to the level of being illegal, the vast majority of them can be adequately punished with in game penalties. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplementary discipline is Alderson’s use of both his upper and lower body to take Dudek to the ice in a dangerous fashion, with Dudek unable to protect himself.

To Summarise:

  • Slew-footing
  • No History - Alderson has neither been suspended nor fined during the 2023/24 EIHL season.

Effective immediately Cardiff Devils #64 Brandon Alderson is fined and suspended for one game.
