Inglis suspended for one game for Boarding

Stars defenseman receives suspension

On Sunday night in Dundee, Stars Kris Inglis was assessed a Major Penalty for Boarding Flyers Adam Holwell.

As the video shows, Inglis dumps the puck into the attacking zone and Holwell goes back to retrieve it, with Inglis pursuing on the forecheck. Holwell arrives at the puck and looks to make a play around the net. As he does, Inglis adjusts his course and hits him forcefully from behind and into the boards. This is Boarding.

It is important to note that the boarding rule puts the onus on the hitter to deliver a legal check, therefore whilst we acknowledge that Holwell does adjust his body position to make a play on the puck, he does not do so in a way that absolves Inglis of responsibility for the nature of this hit. From the moment Holwell is at the hash marks and Inglis at the top of the circles, Inglis sees nothing but Holwell’s numbers until contact is made.

This is not a situation where a sudden or unexpected movement by the player receiving the check turns a legal check into an illegal one. When Holwell begins to make a play on the puck, Inglis is lined up with the back of the left side of Holwell’s body, Inglis has time to react to Holwell's movement. Having seen Holwell’s numbers for some time, who is at a vulnerable distance from the boards, Inglis chooses to finish his check into his opponent's back, driving him into the boards. Inglis had sufficient time to minimize the force of this hit, avoid the hit entirely or adjust his course to deliver a legal check.

Instead, with the onus on him to avoid delivering an illegal and dangerous hit, Inglis delivers the check directly through Holwell’s back, driving him dangerously into the boards.

To Summarise:

  • This is Boarding
  • No History - Inglis has neither been suspended nor fined during the 2023/24 EIHL season.

Effective immediately Dundee Stars #11 Kris Inglis is fined and suspended for one game.

Dundee were informed about this suspension at 9:41am on Wednesday morning.
