Jones suspended for three games

Steelers defenseman receives suspension

On Friday night in Belfast, Steelers Defenceman Sam Jones was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for charging Giants forward Matt Foley.

As the video shows, Jones attempts to clear the puck from his Defensive zone. Foley keeps the puck in at the blue line, makes a play on the puck and continues skating down the wall. After the puck is released, Jones steps up on Foley, elevates and delivers a high hard hit into the head and body of Foley, causing an apparent injury removing him from the game. This is Charging.

It is important to note that this is not a case where a legal check to an opponent's torso or shoulder rides up and makes subsequent or glancing contact with his head. This is an unnecessary, reckless (Category 2) forceful hit that makes contact with an opponent's head, causing an injury.

To Summarise:

  • Charging
  • Caused an injury
  • No History during the 22/23 EIHL season

Effective immediately, Sheffield Steelers Sam Jones is fined and suspended for three games. This incident will remain on the player’s record for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.
