Sorenson suspended for one game

Panthers forward receives suspension

On Sunday night in Altrincham, Panthers forward Tanner Sorenson was assessed a Major and Game Misconduct for an Illegal Check to the Head of Storm Forward Jesper Ohrvall.

As the video shows, Storm are cycling the puck in the offensive zone. Ohrvall receives a pass, collecting the puck at the hash marks, with Sorenson closing in on a defensive play. Seeing Sorenson, Ohrvall passes the puck to his teammate after which Sorenson initiates a high hit, making the head the main point of contact on a hit where such head contact was avoidable. This is an Illegal Check to the Head.

It is important to note that both elements of the Illegal Check to the Head rule are met on this hit:

First, the head is the main point of contact with Sorenson's shoulder and elbow making contact with the head of Ohrvall, and it is the head that absorbs the majority of the force on this hit. Second, the head contact on this play was avoidable. If Sorenson wants to make this hit, he must stay low and choose an angle of approach that leads to a full body check through the shoulder or chest, rather than making the head the main point of contact.

To summarise:

  • This is an Illegal Check to the Head
  • No History - Sorenson has neither been suspended or fined during the 2022/23 EIHL season.

Effective immediately Nottingham Panthers #73 Tanner Sorenson is fined and suspended for one game.
