Stars win in shootout as Flyers record first point

The Dundee Stars came from behind twice before eventually beating local rivals Fife on penalty shots. The Flyers picked up their first point of the 2021/22 season in defeat.

Period one was goalless but it was the Stars who had the better of the chances, just unable to find a way past Shane Owen despite significantly outshooting the Flyers.

Somewhat against the run of play in period two, Fife took the lead. Greg Chase picked up the puck in the neutral zone and drove towards the net before finishing nicely past Adam Morrison at 25:38. After taking the lead, the Flyers were dangerous on the break - both Chase and Matt Carter had chanced through 1-on-0 but found Morrison in the way.

Dundee levelled the scores just under ten minutes later however to end the period all square. Craig Garrigan broke down the wing and saw his shot saved by Owen, but Spencer Dorowicz was on hand to put home the rebound.

Just 15 seconds into the third Chase went through 1-on-0 and again made no mistake with the finish to put the Flyers back ahead shorthanded. An unfortunate bounce let the Stars tie things up - Fife's Matt Carter attempted to play the puck out of his zone, but the puck deflected off his own player into the path of Dillon Lawrence who wristed home from the slot. All square with around 14 minutes left to play.

Neither side could find a winner despite late pressure from the Stars and the game headed to overtime. 3-on-3 also couldn't produce a winner thanks to the efforts of Morrison and Owen, meaning that a shootout was needed to determine the winner - not that the excellent crowd at the Dundee Ice Arena minded the extra entertainment.

Matt Carter and Connor Sills scored in round one, with Greg Chase on target in the second before Philipe Sanche tied it in round four. Neither side four a winner in the fifth meaning that the shootout went to sudden death - however, neither side were able to break the deadlock through four more sounds. Finally, in round ten, Dillon Lawrence beat Owen while Morison denied Craig Peacock to give Dundee the extra point.
