The 2010/11 season will be Sam Zajac's first in the Elite League having signed for the Winn Solicitors Newcastle Vipers from the Basingstoke Bison during the summer. The 21-year-old defenceman is no stranger to Ice Hockey fans in the North East having come through the Whitley Warriors junior development programme.
"I'm really looking forward to my first season as a Viper" said Zajac. "We aren't seen as one of the so-called big five but given the players that Danny has signed I think we will cause a few surprises this season. I think we've got the ability to take points off everyone at least once during the season and hopefully we'll finish the season with a spot at the playoff finals weekend".
Having learnt his trade at Whitley's Hillheads rink, Zajac feels this could be an advantage: "Playing so much junior and senior hockey in Whitley Bay is going to be an advantage as along with the other British players we're very familiar with the rink. The place has a lot of character and when the fans get going the atmosphere is second to none. If we capitalise on this will be will give us a huge advantage when playing at home".
Despite having spent the previous two season in the EPL, Zajac believes he can adapt comfortably with the Elite League: "Having spoken to players such as Jez Lundin who have experienced both leagues I am expecting a faster, more physical game this season. It also seems there is more emphasis on systems and team play, where EPL games can seem more gung-ho at times. I've been working hard in the gym and have added some size over the summer to make sure I can be effective for Danny and the Vipers".
