The 2015/16 CHL and EIHL season is Rod Sarich’s tenth as a Sheffield Steeler.

It was in 2005 that Sarich arrived in Sheffield, signed then by coach Paul Heavey. Prior to that ‘Roddy’ had a successful junior career predominantly with the Calgary Hitman where he won the 1998/99 WHL championship.

Those junior days led to him being drafted by the Florida Panthers in 1999. Three seasons in the ECHL with the Louisiana Icegators and Augusta Lynx, plus a short 20 game spell in Finland all led to Sarich reaching an agreement to begin his Steelers career in 2005.

The record shows that during his time in Sheffield, the 34 year-old has won the Elite League Championship on three occasions, the Playoff title twice and the British Knockout Cup.

What the record however doesn’t show is that in 2012 Sarich’s career was almost ended when after a freak collision in a game against Nottingham Panthers, Rod was admitted to hospital and underwent an emergency operation that removed a third of his kidney. Retirement though wasn’t even a question for the durable Canadian as he returned to the Steelers the following season playing 57 of the club’s 60 games.

Now armed with a British passport, he represented the GB national team in 2013, playing three games in the Olympic pre-qualification tournament in Latvia. Doug Christiansen who was the GB assistant coach during that tournament was to take over the Steelers the following season but didn’t include Sarich in his plans. A Steeler through and through though as he refused approaches from other club’s and missed the whole of the 2013/14 season only to make his return in the summer of 2014 under Gerad Adams.

With a new contract signed in the summer of 2015, Paul Thompson will be the latest coach to take Rod Sarich under his wing, fully committed as always.
