SPECIAL DAY FOR THOMAS
November 5, 2012
Sheffield Steelers press release
On Sunday, Thomas Fletcher was the Sheffield Steelers guest of honour at their Challenge Cup game against fieriest rivals Nottingham Panthers.
Thomas had only been to two Steelers games before after being introduced to the sport by his brother Alex and best friend Scott
The little man has been suffering recently after being diagnosed with Obliterative Bronchiolitis, a rare and life-limiting disease.
So once Steelers commercial manager Mike O'Connor heard of the club's latest recruit, he invited the Fletcher family to a game.
"I think its fair to say that Thomas is now the Steelers' biggest fan," said O'Connor.
"Fans never get to go inside the dressing room before a game, but once I mentioned Thomas to captain Jonathan Phillips he had the full invite.
Thomas and his friend met Phillips and whole Steelers team, including the night's game-winning goal hero, another Thomas, Tom Sestito.
"I think Thomas and his group enjoyed the whole dressing-room experience," said Phillips.
"Thomas was like one of the boys giving us high fives and getting his shirt signed by the whole team.
"I think he was a bit mesmerised by Tom Sestito though, he just said 'Wow your huge' when he saw him.
"We made sure that Thomas then came into the sponsors lounge post game and heard all the interviews that we have to do. He is welcome down here with us any time he is town."
As well as being in the dressing room, Thomas had the full guided tour of the Motorpoint Arena which included going into the arena control room and making a couple of announcements over the PA system and being led onto the ice for a special photo.
"I think it is fair to say that Thomas certainly left his mark on all who met him on Sunday," added O'Connor.
"His smile lit up the arena, he and his family were a pleasure to be around. We know that Thomas is following us closely and the Steelers will certainly be keeping a close eye on him and how he fights his battles as well."
