Cardiff Devils press release
The Cardiff Devils are pleased to announce the signing of National Hockey League heavyweight, Paul Bissonnette, today.
The 6’ 3 Canadian, described as one of ice hockey’s “most interesting personalities” joins the Devils line up from the Phoenix Coyotes, of the NHL.
The Cardiff Devils intend to debut 27 year old Bissonnette in Scotland this weekend in two away matches against Braehead Clan and Edinburgh Capitals, subject to finalized paperwork.
Entering the UK for the first time, Bissonnette is welcoming the chance to get back to playing ice hockey after a month-long NHL lockout which has still yet to be resolved.
The versatile player, and reckonable physical force, will be playing both forward and defence, for the South Wales roster.
The Cardiff Devils have announced the signing after a tumultuous week which saw 16 match penalties imposed after a fiery game with Coventry Blaze last Sunday. Renowned for his tough style of play and no nonsense approach, Bissonnette said, “I’m coming here to play ice hockey. I’m not looking to prove myself, but I’ll be standing up for my teammates.”
Head coach, Gerad Adams, said, “Paul’s arrival is a huge boost to our organization and gives us flexibility and options with the recent suspensions and Tyson Marsh out due to injury.”
Cardiff Devils CEO, Paul Ragan, said, “It’s been an eventful week for the club. Since releasing Milam, Gerad has been on the hunt for an appropriate replacement. We are confident we’ve done that and more. We’re as keen as our loyal supporters are to welcome Paul to Wales and to the Cardiff Devils family.”
The down to earth Canadian player is well known for his presence on social media as well as on the ice. With over 340,000 followers on Twitter and an enviable media presence, Bissonnette will be tweeting about his experiences in the UK as an Elite League player.
Looking forward to the chance to experience Welsh culture, Bissonnette said, “I’m excited to be here and can’t wait to play competitive games again. I’ve heard a lot about the great lifestyle and people.”
Bissonnette will be joining some familiar faces in the Cardiff Devils squad, having played previously with Mac Faulkner, Devin Didiomete and Chris Blight.
