Russell Cowley has been named Genting Casino Coventry Blaze captain in the absence of Shea Guthrie.
Blaze expect Canadian forward Guthrie to be sidelined for a considerable amount of time following his injury sustained in Friday night’s 4-1 defeat at Belfast Giants.
Coach Paul Thompson had no hesitation in moving Cowley, in his 11th season with the club, up from assistant captain to lead the team.
Thompson said: “It is a huge blow to lose Shea and we are still in a state of shock. We have no idea how long he will be out.
“To lose one of the most impact players, if not the impact player, in the league is going to hurt. But we have been battling injuries all year and this is another blow.
“But there was no-one else other than Russell to give the captaincy too. He is a leader on and off the ice and he knows what the club is all about from top to bottom.
“He was an obvious choice to step up and I know he will see that as a big honour.”
Cowley will hope to lead the team to victory when Nottingham Panthers visit the Skydome tomorrow night in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League Erhardt Conference (5.15pm face-off).
